The Town of Amherst Department of Public Works announced on March 30 that street sweeping operations for the year 2026 will begin on April 1. The program will cover various sections of the town and is expected to continue until mid- to late June.

The annual street sweeping is important for maintaining clean roads and ensuring safe travel conditions throughout Amherst. Residents are advised that operations may be affected by weather or road obstacles, such as on-street parking, which can limit the effectiveness of the sweepers.

The department requests that residents do not leave large windrows or piles of sand along the edge of roads, as sweepers cannot pick up these materials. Instead, such debris can be brought to the landfill on Route 9 – Belchertown Road at no charge.

Sweeping will occur in several main areas: Central-West (including Amity Street, Lincoln Avenue, and surrounding streets), Central-East (including Chestnut Street, High Street, Canton Avenue, and others), South Amherst (covering all streets south from Northampton Road), East Side routes (such as Echo Hill and Amherst Woods), and North Amherst (including all streets north from North Pleasant Street). The list provided by the department is not exhaustive but gives a general overview of scheduled locations.

For questions about specific routes or schedules, residents are encouraged to contact the Amherst Department of Public Works at (413)259-3050 X-0.
