Rep. Richard Neal, currently serving Massachusetts’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, voiced his constituents’ concerns regarding Social Security and economic policies in a series of tweets. Neal, who has been in Congress since 1989, shared his thoughts on pressing issues including social welfare and economic policies impacted by tariffs, as reflected in his tweets over two days in April 2025.

On April 7, 2025, Rep. Neal participated in a public demonstration in South Hadley, where he stood with his constituents against potential federal changes to Social Security and other benefits. In his tweet, he stated, “This weekend, I joined hundreds of my constituents in South Hadley who stood up and made their voices heard. They want this administration and Elon Musk to keep their hands off of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans’ benefits, and more.”

Later that day, Neal criticized the current administration’s economic management, highlighting the negative impacts of tariff policies. He noted, “In less than 100 days, this administration has taken an economy that was the envy of the world and is now threatening to plunge us into a recession. The Trump Tariff Tax is tanking the economy, erasing trillions of dollars in retirement savings and increasing costs for the”

On April 8, 2025, Neal expressed personal and broader societal concerns related to Social Security. Reflecting on his own experiences, he commented, “As someone who is only here today because of Social Security survivor benefits, this would have been disastrous to my family. And what about our retirees? After years of hard work, standing in line or waiting on the phone for hours is the last thing they should be worried about.”
