Massachusetts baseball falls to Northern Illinois 6-0 in series finale

The University of Massachusetts baseball team lost 6-0 to Northern Illinois in the series finale on April 4 at Earl Lorden Field.

This result moves UMass to a record of 6-17 overall and 2-13 in the Mid-American Conference, while Northern Illinois improves to 18-9 overall and 10-5 in league play. The shutout marks another setback for the Minutemen as they continue their conference schedule.

Gavin O’Brien, Ty Fox, Will Briggs, and Jared Muñoz each recorded one hit for UMass. Both O’Brien and Briggs contributed doubles. Northern Illinois took an early lead with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and expanded it to 4-0 by the end of the second inning. The score remained unchanged through six innings until NIU added two more runs in the top of the ninth.

UMass pitcher Justin Masteralexis received his fourth loss of the season after giving up four runs on five hits over two innings. Carter Cox pitched eight scoreless innings for Northern Illinois, allowing only three hits while striking out twelve batters.

Looking ahead, Massachusetts will prepare for its next matchup against Boston College in Chestnut Hill during the opening round of the Baseball Beanpot on Tuesday, April 7.
