The University of Massachusetts baseball team lost to Western Michigan, 13-4, on March 29 at Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field.
The game marked another defeat for Massachusetts, which now holds a 5-14 overall record and is 1-11 in the Mid-American Conference. Western Michigan improved its season record to 13-12 overall and 9-3 in conference play.
Ty Fox and Reece McCarthy each collected two hits for the Minutemen, with both players also driving in a run. Anthony Tirado led the team with two runs batted in, while Gavin O’Brien, Will Briggs, Marc Willi, and Dean Gobeil each contributed a hit. Doubles were recorded by O’Brien and Gobeil. Tirado, O’Brien, Braden Sullivan, and Gobeil all scored runs for Massachusetts.
The Minutemen took an early lead after O’Brien doubled and was brought home by Fox’s single in the first inning. However, Western Michigan quickly tied the game before scoring four runs in the second inning to take control. The Broncos added two more runs in the third inning and six more in the fourth to build a commanding lead.
Despite scoring three times in the seventh inning, Massachusetts could not overcome Western Michigan’s advantage. Justin Masteralexis took his third loss of the season after allowing five runs over two innings pitched for UMass. Ricky Kidd earned his third win for Western Michigan by limiting UMass to one run over six innings while striking out four batters.
Looking ahead, Massachusetts will host Quinnipiac on Tuesday at Earl Lorden Field.
