The University of Massachusetts baseball team lost to Akron, 12-2, in the first game of their weekend series on March 13 at Skeeles Field.
This result leaves Massachusetts with a record of 4-6 overall and 0-4 in the Mid-American Conference. Akron improved to 8-9 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Ty Fox and Marc Willi led the Minutemen with two hits each, both also driving in a run. Gavin O’Brien and Reece McCarthy scored the only runs for Massachusetts. Fox hit a double during the game.
Akron took an early lead by scoring two runs in the first inning. The Minutemen narrowed the gap in the third when O’Brien reached base on an error and later scored on a single by Fox. However, Akron responded with five runs in their half of the third inning, including an RBI double, making it a 7-1 game. In the fourth inning, McCarthy walked and stole second before scoring on Willi’s single through the left side.
Akron added four more runs in the sixth inning and another run in the seventh to secure a 12-2 victory. Callen Powers took the loss for Massachusetts after pitching five innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits while striking out six batters. Josiah Ross earned the win for Akron, giving up two runs on four hits over four innings.
The teams are scheduled to play game two of their series on Saturday, March 14 at Skeeles Field.
