The University of Massachusetts hockey team was named the recipient of the Charlie Holt Sportsmanship Award for the 2025-26 season, according to a March 11 announcement from Hockey East. This marks the fourth time in six seasons that Massachusetts has received this recognition.
The award is given annually to the team with the lowest average penalty minutes per game during regular season Hockey East play. For the 2025-26 season, Massachusetts averaged 6.29 penalty minutes per game, earning them their sixth overall Charles E. Holt Sportsmanship Award since its establishment in 1992.
Named after former University of New Hampshire head coach Charles E. Holt, the award highlights teams that demonstrate discipline and sportsmanlike conduct on the ice throughout conference competition.
Massachusetts previously won this distinction in several other seasons: 2024-25 (6.7 penalty minutes per game), 2021-22 (7.58), 2020-21 (9.5), 2006-07 (10.8), and 2001-02 (11.8).
The announcement begins Hockey East’s postseason awards period, recognizing achievements across its member programs.
