The University of Massachusetts women’s basketball program announced on May 6 the addition of three transfer athletes—Alba Caballero, Reagan Hurst, and Caroline Dotsey—and first-year recruit Kiki Scott to its roster.
The signings are intended to strengthen the team’s lineup following a season that saw notable progress. “I was proud of our team’s progress last season,” said women’s basketball head coach Mike Leflar. “23-wins, multiple All-Conference honorees, and growth towards our goal of a MAC Championship. We have eight players returning, and that fact attracted the players we recruited from the transfer portal. Continuity is a strength, and we are built to win now. The players who chose UMass this spring want to make that happen. Our program got better!”
Caballero joins from Ball State after appearing in 23 games as a freshman and achieving over 56 percent shooting from the field. She has been recognized for her play at both national youth levels in Spain and with club teams across Europe. Leflar said about Caballero: “We saw Alba’s combination of size, strength, and skill this past season for Ball State…her skills make our team much more difficult to guard. I am excited about the player she is coming into our program, and for the player she will become.”
Hurst comes from Tennessee Tech where she started most games over her career—including all contests during her senior campaign—and averaged 12 points per game last season. She helped lead Upperman High School in Tennessee to an undefeated state championship run before college play. Leflar said: “We wanted to add scoring and experience in the backcourt, and Reagan Hurst brings that…Reagan also has great length and anticipation.” Dotsey transfers from Butler after averaging 7.6 points per game as a junior; previously at Maine she was named Sixth Player of the Year in America East Conference play.
Dotsey was described by Leflar as “a skilled and versatile post player” whose experience would be an asset for UMass’ front court: “She made a big impact at Butler last season…Caroline’s experience is going to be a huge asset for our front court.” Scott joins as a standout high school guard who scored over 2,000 career points while leading Rosedale Christian Academy (Maryland) to regional championships.
Leflar concluded on Scott: “She is a scoring point guard but has skills that will allow her to play multiple guard positions…Kiki will elevate our program on the court.” The new additions reflect efforts by Massachusetts women’s basketball staff to build on recent successes with experienced transfers alongside promising young talent.
