The City of Northampton announced on April 24 a series of construction activities scheduled for the week of April 27, including ongoing infrastructure improvements, road repairs, and utility upgrades across various neighborhoods.

These weekly updates are important for residents and commuters to stay informed about potential disruptions, closures, and progress on public works. The city provides an interactive map managed by the Mayor’s Office to help the community track these projects.

According to the announcement, recent work by the Highway Division included pothole repairs on Vernon Street and in Northampton Meadows, sign maintenance on North Elm Street, sewer service repair on Florence Street, manhole adjustments on Franklin Street, trench cut repairs, school driveway sweeping at multiple schools, and grading operations. Some streets remain affected: Federal Street is reduced to one lane at a culvert crossing between Milton Street and Vernon Street until further notice; Lovefield Street remains closed. Residents are encouraged to report potholes using the city’s online form so hazards can be addressed promptly.

Several major projects are underway or planned. Accessibility upgrades will reconstruct a section of Boggy Meadow Road into an accessible multi-use trail; this area will remain closed during construction with alternate entrances open via North Farms Road and Marian Street. Replacement work is planned for Ellington Road’s outlet control structure once water levels permit. Eversource Gas continues main replacement projects throughout the city in areas such as Harold Street, Hillside Road, Perkins Avenue, Rick Drive, Sheffield Lane, Summer Street, and Washington Avenue—with contracts awarded to J.S. Rae and NPL Construction.

Additional improvements include bicycle and pedestrian enhancements near Northampton High School along North Elm Street by Gomes Construction Company; stream restoration at Old Wilson Road by SumCo Eco-Contracting (expected completion June 30); bridge deck replacements along local rail trails (all four bridges now open); sidewalk reconstruction; roadway upgrades on Terrace Lane; ongoing sewer lining using cured-in-place pipe technology; pothole patching with Warner Bros., LLC.; demolition of out-of-service water storage tanks; tree protection zones around public shade trees during utility work; as well as future resumption of dam vegetation management and pedestrian improvements in spring 2026.

Residents can find details about all current Public Works projects through the city’s Current Projects webpage or sign up for automatic notifications via Notify Me under News Flash.
