Rep. Richard Neal, U.S. Congressman representing Massachusetts’ 1st district since 1989, recently addressed several key issues and events on his social media account, including legislative action on health care, the passing of a colleague, and reflections on the January 6 Capitol attack.
On January 5, 2026, Neal announced legislative efforts by House Democrats regarding health care costs: “House Democrats have forced a vote to extend the ACA tax credits and reverse skyrocketing health care costs for millions of Americans. Republicans have a choice: keep driving health care costs higher, or finally deliver relief to those who need it most.”
The following day, January 6, Neal expressed condolences over the death of Congressman Doug LaMalfa: “I am saddened to hear about the passing of our colleague, Congressman Doug LaMalfa. Doug never forgot where he came from and was proud to represent his beloved community of Northern California. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Jill, his children, and his staff.”
Later that same day, Neal reflected on the fifth anniversary of the January 6 Capitol riot: “Five years later, and these images remain forever ingrained in my memory. I was in my office just feet from the House floor when the mob reached our windows: yelling, pounding, and eventually breaking the glass. Capitol Police rushed in, we barricaded the door…”
Neal has served as a member of Congress since replacing Edward Boland in 1989 and previously held office in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Born in Worcester in 1949 and currently residing in Springfield at age 74, Neal is an alumnus of American International College.
