Rep. Richard Neal, U.S. Congressman representing Massachusetts’ 1st district since 1989, used his social media platform to voice criticism of former President Donald Trump’s request for $200 billion in funding for military action in Iran and to highlight the potential domestic uses of such funds.

On March 25, 2026, Neal posted: “Trump is asking for $200 billion for his reckless, unauthorized war in Iran. How could that money help the American people?

Lower health care premiums for more than 20 million Americans who receive coverage through the ACA
Provide SNAP benefits to 42 million Americans in”

Later that day, he addressed concerns over congressional oversight and executive authority: “Our Founding Fathers are rolling over in their graves.

Resolutions of inquiry are a critical tool for congressional oversight, helping Congress fulfill its obligations as a coequal branch of government. We do not serve under the President.

On March 26, Neal returned to economic issues tied to foreign policy decisions: “The American people didn’t ask for the war in Iran, yet they are paying the price.

Neal has served as a member of Congress since replacing Edward Boland in 1989. He previously held office in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Born in Worcester in 1949 and currently residing in Springfield, Neal graduated from American International College with a BA degree.
