Representative Richard Neal, serving in the U.S. Congress for Massachusetts’ 1st District since 1989, is actively engaging with his community and expressing concerns on national policy issues. Neal, who replaced Edward Boland in Congress and previously served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, shared his recent activities and opinions through a series of tweets.

On April 30, 2025, Rep. Neal wrote about a roundtable he held with local veterans to discuss the policies and actions taken by the Trump Administration. Emphasizing the impact on over 35,000 veterans residing in the First District, he stressed the commitment made to servicemembers upon their enlistment. Neal tweeted, “Last week, I held a roundtable with local veterans to discuss policies and actions taken by the Trump Administration and the impact on the more than 35,000 veterans who live in the First District.”

On May 2, 2025, Neal participated in Arbor Day commemorations at Dryden Elementary School, alongside Mayor Sarno and city officials. Reflecting on his tenure as Mayor of Springfield, during which the city became known as ‘Tree City USA,’ he expressed pride in the city maintaining this designation. He shared, “This morning, I joined Mayor Sarno and city officials at Dryden Elementary School to commemorate Arbor Day.”

Later that same day, Neal commented on President Trump’s actions regarding Harvard University’s tax-exempt status. He voiced his opposition, asserting that Harvard acted lawfully, and criticized the president’s approach as weaponizing governmental power. Neal termed these actions as detrimental to the integrity of institutions supporting the rule of law. He stated, “Harvard has done nothing wrong. By revoking Harvard’s tax-exempt status, President Trump is weaponizing the power of our government to attack any institutions that stand up for the rule of law.”

Richard Neal was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1949 and is currently a resident of Springfield. He is an alumnus of American International College, where he earned a BA.
