Rep. Richard Neal, currently serving in the U.S. Congress and representing Massachusetts’ 1st district since 1989, has shared a series of tweets reflecting on significant historical events and ongoing political issues. Neal, who succeeded Edward Boland in Congress and has a background in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, continues to be an active voice on matters affecting his constituents.
On July 2, 2025, Rep. Neal commemorated the signing of the Civil Rights Act by President Lyndon B. Johnson. He marked its 61st anniversary with a tweet that stated: “OTD in 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law, prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion, or national origin, and desegregating public facilities and schools.”
Later that day, Neal expressed his commitment to supporting his constituents who rely on government assistance programs. In his tweet at 18:21 UTC, he declared: “I’m standing up for the 330,000+ people in MA-01 who rely on Medicaid to receive health care.” He emphasized his advocacy for those dependent on SNAP benefits and Pell grants as well.
The following morning on July 3rd at 08:30 UTC, Neal criticized Republican efforts regarding healthcare and tax policies. He tweeted: “Republicans think they can pull the wool over the eyes of the American people by jamming through their health care cuts and tax cuts for billionaires in the middle of the night.” He invited followers to join him as he led a debate on these issues from the House Floor.
Born in Worcester in 1949 and residing in Springfield today, Richard Neal holds a BA from American International College.
