Rep. Richard Neal, who represents Massachusetts’ 1st district in the U.S. Congress, recently used his social media platform to address several key issues affecting his constituents and the nation.
On September 1, 2025, Neal emphasized the importance of American labor values by stating, “The American work ethic shaped this country, and we are a better nation for it. Whether it be fighting to protect pensions, Social Security, or the right to unionize, I am proud to stand with the American worker today and every day.”
Two days later, on September 3, Neal criticized federal actions impacting scientific research funding. He wrote, “The President’s assault on science will have lasting repercussions for our nation. Freezing $1.4 billion in NIH grants only serves to harm America’s innovative edge, while China and other global competitors are doubling their efforts on scientific research. For Massachusetts,” referencing concerns about how these decisions could affect both national innovation and local institutions.
Later that same day, Neal addressed progress at the Holyoke Veterans’ Home after years of advocacy from families of residents. He stated, “After years of advocacy by families of Holyoke Veterans’ Home residents, we’re one step closer to delivering the new facility our veterans deserve. I’m proud that the federal funding we secured will ensure world-class care for our nation’s heroes.”
Neal has represented Massachusetts’s 1st District since 1989 after succeeding Edward Boland. Prior to serving in Congress, he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Born in Worcester in 1949 and currently residing in Springfield, Neal holds a Bachelor’s degree from American International College.
