Cost of college went up for all students at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst

In-state tuition and fees rose 3.1 percent for 2018-19 at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Massachusetts residents paid $15,887 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $476 more than the $15,411 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 117.6 percent more than residents this year, or $34,570. Their price tag grew 3.3 percent from $33,477 in 2017-18.

About 70 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Massachusetts residents. About 19 percent are residents of other states and 10 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 91 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 3,901 students received grants or scholarships totaling $37.8 million and 2,712 students took out student loans totaling more than $22.1 million.

Including all undergraduates (30,593), 17,087 students used grants or scholarships totaling $166.7 million, and 13,099 students took out $88.5 million in federal student loans.
