16

The Amherst softball team scored three runs with outs in the first inning Wednesday and never looked back, rolling to an 11-1, 5-inning, mercy-rule victory over Western New England University at the Golden Bear Softball Stadium.

With the win the Mammoths improve to 16-6 overall. Amherst is off until Friday when it travels to Williamstown to begin a three-game series with rival Williams Friday at 5 p.m. The Golden Bears slipped to 17-11 on the season.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Rachel Lovejoy stood on first with two outs in the first, but stole second. Dani Torres Werra then lined an RBI-single into right field for a 1-0 lead. She went from first to third on Jess Butler's single with Butler getting to second when the throw from the outfield was late in an effort to nab Torres Werra. Sadie Pool then lined the first pitch she saw back up the middle for a two-run single and the 3-0 lead.

* The Mammoths put the game away with a seven-run top of the third inning. Torres Werra ignited the outburst with a single and Butler followed with another safety. Pool was hit by a pitch to load the bases and the Golden Bears switched pitchers, but to no avail as a wild pitch allowed Torres Werra to score for a 4-0 lead.

* Randi Finkelstein put a charge into the rally with laser line drive into the left-center field gap to score two runners for a 6-0 lead. She scored on America Rangel's RBI-single just inside the bag at first and down the right-field line. Autumn Lee capped the inning with an RBI-single to left for an 10-1 lead.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst banged out 13 hits in just five innings. Butler led the parade by going 3 for 3 with 3 runs scored. Finkelstein was 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. Pool was 2 for 2 with an RBI and run scored. Torres Werra and Lee were both 2 for 4 with an RBI. Torres Werra had 2 runs scored.
