First-year Jessica Huang led the way for the Amherst College women's golf team as the Mammoths finished Tuesday's first round of the NCAA Division III Championships in 14th place at the par-72 Bay Oaks Country Club.
The NESCAC champion Mammoths posted a score of 317 (+29) as a team on the first day of the four-day stroke play tournament.
Huang, the NESCAC individual champion, led the Mammoths with a 6-over 78, highlighted by two birdies in her first nine holes after teeing off from the 10th hole, and finished the day tied for 42nd in the 151-golfer field.
Sophomore Priya Bakshi was one stroke behind with a 7-over 79 to tie for 49th place after making seven pars in a 2-over first nine holes.
The other three Mammoths on the course all tied for 61st place as first-year Gihoe Seo, sophomore Jenny Hua and junior Janelle Jin each carded an 8-over 80.
Emory leads the 29-team field with a 292 (+4) and WashU junior Annie Mascot shot a 3-under 69 to claim the individual lead.
The Mammoths tee off beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern for Wednesday's second round, after which the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and 6 individuals not on those teams.
