Cardwell, Wolmer notch top performances as 15 Mammoths earn All-Region honors

Sophia Wolmer '23 and Eliza Cardwell '25 of the Amherst College women's track and field team posted top outdoor performances in the Mideast Region to highlight a group of 16 Mammoths who posted 18 All-Region performances.

All-Region honors are awarded by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) to the top five performances in each individual event and top three in each relay over the course of the outdoor season prior to the NCAA Championships. The Mideast Region includes 27 schools in western Massachusetts, eastern New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Wolmer dominated the distance races, posting the top regional performances in both the 5000m and the 10,000m. An NCAA qualifier in both events, she recorded a 5k time of 16:50.39 on April 15 at Princeton's Ellis Invitational and ran the 10k in 34:59.86 to win the NESCAC Championship. The Tenafly, New Jersey, native now boasts seven career All-Region selections and is a two-time All-American.

Sidnie Kulik '25 was also honored in the 5000m, finishing just behind Wolmer with a time of 17:13.39 at the UMass Invitational on April 3 that was the fourth-best in the region. The Plymouth, Massachusetts, native collected All-Region honors in all three seasons of her debut collegiate campaign after previously earning accolades in cross country and indoor track & field.

Cardwell earned All-Region honors in four different events, highlighted by the top regional performance in the 100m hurdles. Cardwell broke the Amherst 100m hurdles record with her time of 14.23 seconds at the NESCAC Championships on April 30. At the same meet, she won the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.66 that ranks third in the region. Cardwell also posted an All-Region performance at NESCACs with a mark of 5.56m in the long jump and was a part of Amherst's All-Region 4x400m relay team. Selected as the NESCAC Most Outstanding Rookie, the Charlotte, North Carolina, native earned All-Region honors in two events in the indoor season for a total of six All-Region accolades in her debut collegiate campaign.

Cardwell teamed with Anna Madden '22 of Winchester, Massachusetts, Juanita Jaramillo '22 of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Katie Lingen '22 of Oak Park, Illinois, to run the 4x400m relay in 3:53.01 to earn All-New England honors at the New England Division III Championships on May 7 with a mark that stood as the second-best in the region. The three seniors on the team earned the same honor last season, while Jaramillo and Madden were also All-Region selections in 2019.

Madden also landed All-Region honors in the 400m with her time of 57.36 seconds that broke the Amherst school record at the UMass Invitational on April 3 and held up as the fourth-best mark in the region.

Cardwell was not the only Mammoth to post All-Region times in the hurdles events. Lindsay Ward '25 of Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, had the region's fourth-best time in the 100m hurdles with a mark of 15.19 seconds at the NESCAC Championships on April 30 to earn All-Region honors in her first season of collegiate competition. Princeton, New Jersey, native Ava Tillman '23 ran the 400m hurdles in at 1:05.06 at the New England Division III Outdoor Championships to collect All-New England accolades as well as her first career All-Region honor.

The three Mammoths that currently share the Amherst pole vault record all garnered All-Region accolades. Mia Bawendi '24, Eve Giancarlo '25 and Jordan Hecker '25 each cleared 3.40m at various points this spring. Hecker, from Demarest, New Jersey, set the mark at the UMass Invitational on April 3. Giancarlo, from Buffalo, New York, matched that height at the Amherst Spring Fling on April 9. Cambridge, Massachusetts, native Bawendi cleared the same height at the NESCAC Championships on April 30. Giancarlo and Hecker also earned All-Region pole vault honors during the indoor season.

Muffie Mazambani '24 recorded an All-Region performance in the triple jump with a mark of 11.21m at the NESCAC Championship on April 30. The Zimbabwean earned All-Region honors in all three seasons of her sophomore year with selections in the triple jump during the winter season and as a forward on the Amherst field hockey team in the fall.

Julia Schor '25 of Denver ran the 1500m in 4:35.70 to win the NEICAAA Championship on May 13 with the fourth-best time in the region. Schor is a more traditional three-season All-Region selection, previously earning the honor in cross country in the fall and in the distance medley relay in the winter indoor season.

Trintje Nydam '24 tallied the fourth-best regional score in the heptathlon, scoring 3648 points at the Williams Invitational on April 15. The Needham, Massachusetts, native previously earned indoor All-Region honors in the pentathlon this winter.

Julia Zacher '25 posted an All-Region performance in the high jump, clearing 1.67m at the Amherst Spring Fling on April 9. The Albany, New York, native earned the same honor in the winter indoor season and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
