On May 5, Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) April 2023 jobs report:

“12 million jobs have been created under President Biden, and while Republicans have put all our progress on the line, today’s jobs report is more proof of the resilience of the American worker. Unemployment is back to a 50-year low, with Black unemployment lower than ever, wages are up, and we can safely put Republicans’ “nobody wants to work” trope to bed.

“Republicans’ brinksmanship is the single largest threat to our economy and to the well-being of our people. While Democrats rebuilt our economy from the bottom up and the middle out, Republicans’ Default on America is a zero-sum game: forcing dangerous cuts to programs for veterans, seniors, and children or derailing our economy with a crisis of their own making.

“Democrats have ushered in landmark unemployment, steady wage growth, and job gains in every corner of the country while reducing the deficit. That’s how you govern, and that’s what the American people expect. Republicans shouldn’t make them pay the price.”
