Callen Powers from the baseball team, along with Matthew Acquah and Collin Catherwood from men’s track and field, were named UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by UMassFive College Credit Union, according to an announcement on April 6. The three athletes will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon this week.
The luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, April 8 at noon in the Berkshire Room of the Berkshire Dining Commons. Attendance costs $17 or $15.30 for UMass alumni.
Powers earned recognition after starting on the mound during Friday’s game against Northern Illinois. He pitched seven complete innings in a shutout win, allowing no runs and only two hits while walking four batters and striking out a career-high ten.
Acquah took first place in the men’s triple jump at Saturday’s UConn Dog Fight meet with a jump measuring 49 feet 6.5 inches. This performance ranks him first in his conference, fifth in Division I’s Northeast region, and seventy-seventh nationally. Acquah has placed first in both meets he has competed in so far this outdoor season and improved his distance by three feet over one week.
Catherwood led the men’s 1500-meter run at the same meet with a finishing time of 3:45.40. His time is currently second-best within his conference and eighth-best in Division I’s Northeast region; it also set a new outdoor program record for men’s track at UMass.
