The Massachusetts women’s lacrosse team defeated Akron 18-10 on April 4 at Garber Field, securing its sixth consecutive win and remaining undefeated in the Mid-American Conference. Five Minutewomen players scored hat tricks during the game, contributing to a balanced offensive performance. UMass now holds a record of 10-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while Akron drops to 8-4 and 3-1.
This result highlights UMass’s strong position within the conference as both teams entered the match without a MAC loss. The team’s ability to distribute scoring across multiple players was key to their victory.
Norah Prizzi and Kassidy Morris led the offense with six points each, recording three goals and three assists apiece. Prizzi’s six points doubled her previous career high. Katie Peterson contributed four goals and one assist, Dylan Lyons added three goals and an assist, while Katie Onderdonk scored her first-career hat trick with three goals—all assisted by Prizzi.
Head coach Jana Drummond said, “We just have to clean up a lot of turnovers and a lot of disciplinary situations. We had six false starts that we gave them draw controls off of, wee had a couple turnovers in the clear and we had a couple unforced turnovers in our offensive end. We’re looking to progress each game. 18-10 is a great score, but I feel like this game, we were a little bit lacking that discipline and connection as a team. Going forward, we really have to tune into that to keep progressing.” Defensively, Heather Clark and Cat Lucus each caused three turnovers while Sienna Diglio caused two; Cate Marshall tied her career high with sixteen draw controls.
Akron started strong with an early lead before UMass responded by scoring six straight goals over just more than six minutes in the second quarter—each from different scorers—to build momentum for the rest of the match. Both teams finished with twenty-eight shots apiece; however, UMass edged out Akron in groundballs (16-14) despite committing eighteen turnovers compared to Akron’s fifteen.
Looking ahead, Massachusetts will conclude its homestand against Columbia on Tuesday at Garber Field.
