The Massachusetts men’s basketball team lost to Coastal Carolina 94-91 in a triple-overtime game on Saturday at the HTC Center. The matchup was part of the second round of the 2025-26 MAC-SBC Challenge.

Marcus Banks Jr. sent the game into a third overtime with a buzzer-beater at the end of the second overtime, but his final attempt to tie fell short, allowing Coastal Carolina to secure the win.

K’Jei Parker led UMass with a career-high 31 points. Daniel Hankins-Sanford recorded a career-best 20 rebounds, marking the most by a Minuteman since Jim Town had 27 against Boston College in December 1976. Hankins-Sanford also scored 10 points for his ninth double-double of the season.

Banks Jr. finished with 21 points for UMass (15-10, 6-6 MAC), and Leonardo Bettiol contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double this year.

For Coastal Carolina, Rasheed Jones scored 26 points, AJ Dancler added 24, and Joshua Beadle had 23. Reggie Hill contributed 11 points and led his team with 13 rebounds.

The starting lineup for UMass included Danny Carbuccia, Marcus Banks Jr., Jayden Ndjigue, Leonardo Bettiol, and Daniel Hankins-Sanford. Banks Jr. opened scoring for UMass with an early three-pointer. Parker entered off the bench and made consecutive threes to give UMass an early lead.

UMass maintained its advantage through much of the first half and led by as many as eight points late in regulation before Coastal Carolina closed the gap. With just seconds left in regulation, Parker hit a three-pointer to tie it at 64-64 and force overtime.

In overtime periods, both teams traded leads multiple times. A last-second three from Banks Jr. extended play into triple overtime after Coastal Carolina briefly took control. In the final moments of triple overtime, Joshua Beadle hit a three-pointer with two seconds remaining to seal Coastal Carolina’s victory.

This was UMass’s first triple-overtime game since January 2025 against Fordham and marked only the tenth such game in program history. Two players set new career highs: K’Jei Parker in points and field goals made, and Daniel Hankins-Sanford in rebounds.

Four Minutemen reached double figures in scoring: Parker (31), Banks Jr. (21), Bettiol (17), and Hankins-Sanford (10). Offensively, UMass outscored Coastal Carolina from the bench with 34 points compared to their opponent’s ten.

UMass will return to MAC play on Friday, February 13th against Akron at 9 p.m., with coverage available on CBS Sports Network and updates provided through umassathletics.com or @UMassMBB on X (Twitter).
