University of Massachusetts men’s lacrosse head coach Kyle Smith, along with alumni Greg MacDonald and Paul Keating, were inducted into the Massachusetts Chapter of the USA Lacrosse Hall of Fame this past weekend.
The induction recognizes significant contributions to the sport by individuals connected to UMass. Honoring both athletic achievement and service, the Hall of Fame highlights those who have had a lasting impact on lacrosse in Massachusetts.
Smith played for UMass from 2010 to 2013 as a three-year starting attack. He earned All-CAA Second Team honors in 2013 and was named to the CAA All-Tournament team in 2012 after helping lead UMass to a Colonial Athletic Association title and an NCAA Tournament appearance. Over his collegiate career, Smith tallied 125 points on 79 goals and 46 assists, collected 69 ground balls, caused 24 turnovers, scored 17 extra-man goals, had nine game winners, appeared in all but one game over four seasons with numerous multi-point performances including a dozen hat tricks. After graduation he began coaching at Merrimack College where he helped secure two Division II National Championships during seven years as an assistant coach before returning to UMass as part of Greg Cannella’s staff in summer 2021. Smith was named head coach at UMass in September 2025.
MacDonald played defense for UMass between 1994 and 1997. He appeared in a total of 46 games with four points (three goals and one assist) along with collecting more than one hundred ground balls throughout his college career.
Keating is recognized not only as an alumnus but also for his long-term involvement as a lacrosse official and supporter of the program at UMass.
The recognition reflects both athletic excellence on the field and ongoing commitment off it among members of the university community.
