The ratio of students to teachers in Northampton-Smith Vocational Agricultural School District rose by 1.1% in the 2021-22 school year, according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

There were 547 students being taught by 58 teachers in Northampton-Smith Vocational Agricultural School District, which covers schools within Hampshire County and has a main office in Northampton. That's an average of 9.4 students per teacher in the district during the 2021-22 school year.

In the previous year, Northampton-Smith Vocational Agricultural School District had 528 students and 57 teachers on staff.

Despite the shortage, under-representation of ethnicities among teachers was found to be a concern. The Rennie Center reported that only nine percent of teachers are people of color.

However, the state is facing a teacher shortage, just like the rest of the U.S. NewsNation reported that the state was offering emergency teaching licenses to educators who only had bachelor’s degrees, in an effort to get more teachers into schools.
