Test expectations: How many Gateway Regional School District students failed to meet the English MCAS expectations in 2021-22 school year?

Of the 370 students who took part in the MCAS, 65% did not meet the testing standard in the 2021-22 school year, according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

These students did not meet the required standards of the English Language Arts portion of the MCAS, compared to the 35% who did.

The number of Gateway Regional School District students who failed their English Language Arts assessments rose by 4.8% from the previous school year.

Gateway Regional School District roughly covers schools within Hampshire County and has a main office in Huntington.

In the 2021-22 school year, 400,101 students took the English Language Arts test in Massachusetts with 65% students failing, 10.1% more than the year before.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's 2022 Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS), the average scale score for grade 10 English Language Arts was 503, which met the expectation level, while the average scale score for grade 10 Science was 499, which only partially met the expectation level.

Massachusetts students performed better than most of their peers in other states, but their own average scores on a national assessment dropped from 2019 levels.
