#4 Mammoths skate past Conn. College, 3-0
- First-year Natalie Stott made 17 saves Friday night to record her fifth shutout of the season, and the #4-ranked Amherst College women's hockey team skated past Connecticut College, 3-0, in a first-place showdown at Orr Rink.
The Mammoths, who received goals from Kate Pohl, Leslie Schwartz, and Anna Baxter in the victory, won their 11th straight game to improve to 12-1-0 overall this season, and 6-1-0 in NESCAC play. The Camels fell to 7-3-0 on the year and 5-2-0 in conference play. The two teams will meet up again tomorrow at 3 p.m. back on the ice at Orr.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths controlled play for much of the first period but could not get on the board until 5:55 and remained in the frame. The Camels had possession deep in their zone when Maeve Reynolds poked and checked the puck away and Pohl gained possession. The Mammoths' leading scorer tried to fire a quick shot but the puck was blocked and got tangled up in the skates of a Camels defender. Pohl quickly gained control just to the left of the goal and quickly fired a shot into the short side for a 1-0 lead.
* With under 30 seconds left in the period, Baxter stole an errant clear neat center ice and skated the puck deep into the Camels' zone. She lost possession for a moment, but grabbed the loose puck, spun back to her left against the board, and sent a pass back to the left point. Schwartz received it in the high slot, just inside the blue line between the circles, and quickly snapped a shot that found the top right-hand corner of the goal for a 2-0 with 7.9 seconds remaining.
* A power-play goal from Baxter in the second period made the margin 3-0. Avery Flynn and Rylee Glennon worked a little give-and-go at the top of the zone, with Flynn letting loose with a high shot on goal. Baxter, stationed at the lower slot in front of the Camel's goal, got her stick on it and redirected the puck past the Camel's keeper with 9:58 left in the stanza.
