Despite 41 shots on goal and a 5-minute power play at the end of the game, the Amherst College men's hockey team could not find the net Friday night, falling to visiting Tufts University, 2-0, at Orr Rink.
The win for the Jumbos was the program's first at Orr Rink since 1995. Tufts improves to 7-13-1 overall and 4-10-1 in the league. The Mammoths, third in NESCAC and losers of just one of their previous nine games entering tonight, fall to 13-5-3 overall and 11-3-1 in the conference.
The Mammoths are back in action Saturday when they host Connecticut College at 3 p.m. at Orr Rink. The Mammoths will be celebrating Senior Day.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Tufts took a 1-0 lead 5 minutes into Friday night's clash. Despite losing a face-off in the Amherst end, defensive pressure by Brennan Horn helped force a weak clearing attempt by the Mammoths that Sedlak stopped along the left boards near the blue line. He passed up to Horn, who sent it back to the Sedlank whose shot from the face-off dot rolled over the right shoulder of Amherst goalie Connor Leslie and dribbled over the goal line for a 1-0 Tufts lead.
* Amherst had a 5-on-3 power play for 1:22 early in the second period and managed seven shots during it, but four were saved by Jumbos' Peyton Durand.
* Clark Bolin's goal at 13:04 of the third period gave Durand and the Jumbos some breathing room. Jumbo Aidan Lovett poked the puck away from an Amherst defender in the Jumbo zone. He broke away, chased by a Mammoth defender, while Bolin hustled to get into the play. Lovett fed Bolin charging down the middle, and he moved to his backhand and flipped it past Leslie for a 2-0 Tufts advantage.
* With 5:08 left in the game, a Jumbo has assessed a 5-minute major penalty for boarding. The Mammoths fired off 11 shots over the final 5 minutes, four saved by Duran and four blocked. They pulled goalie Connor Lesie with 3:01 to go to no avail as Tufts skated away with the two-goal victory.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Leslie stopped 14 of the 16 shots on goal for Tufts.
* Amherst won 37 of 70 face-offs in the game. Matt Toporowski won 14 of 24 drawn and Zach Murray won 10 of 16 taken.
